Strength in What Remains By Tracy Kidder.

Strength in What Remains (Random House Reader's Circle)Strength in What Remains
By Tracy Kidder.
"Strength in What Remains tells a magnificent story--that of Deogratias Niyizonkiza, a survivor of the Burundian and Rwandan genocides, who escapes, practically penniless, to New York City, and works his way back from homeless grocery deliverer to Dartmouth medical student and founder of a Partners in Health-affiliated hospital in his native Burundi--fairly well.
I say only ""fairly well"" because Kidder awkwardly injects himself into the second half of the book, leading to a lot of frankly inappropriate navelgazing narration. But that's really my only beef (although Kidder's repeatedly calling it ""the Congo"" instead of ""Congo"" irked the heck out of me; the definite article is an insulting vestige of colonization (you may note that Niyizonkiza refers to the country as simply ""Congo"")). For the most part, Kidder talents as a biographer suit Niyizonkiza's awesomeness as a human being."
